Show FIRST PRESBYTERIAN. Following the custom of past years the last Sabbath services of the year in the First Presbyterian church were services of praise In speaking of the messages of the past year, Rev. Carver said, in part: "Once it was thought that the service serv-ice that God desired most was the withdrawing from the world and llv-i llv-i ing in denial of all that means most to worldly associations. Now we look upon activity in the performance of daily tasks done in good spirit and faithful performance as sincerest service serv-ice to our Maker and praise that is acceptable unto Him. '"Every' mason In the quarry, Every builder on the shore, Every woodman in ihe forest, Every boatamau at the oar, Hi in' wood and drawing water, Splitting stones and clearing sod; All the dusty ranks of labor In the regiment at God March together toward the temple, Do the tasks II is hands prepare. Hunest toil is holy service, j Faithful work is praise and prayer. j "The year that is closing has brought to each of us many little 'deeds that our time and strength 1 could do and one of the very first i thoughts of praise unto God should be reverent thankfulness for opportunity and strength for service to God, to Ifouulry and to our fellow men. That day will be your darkest and longest and mosl hopeless of your life when you have neither strength nor opportunity oppor-tunity of real honest needed work "They tell us that in each cubic foot of air there are potentially one thousand pounds of power; and that tin coming discovery will be the i method of unlocking this latent force in the atmosphere and transforming jit into light, boat and power. No one has ever yet attempted to esti- i mate the unlocked powers of one whole hearted life that is devoted to any worthy cause. The Wright broth lers, Thomas A Edison on, there are a hundred names that tell of what at- j tempts man has made in the seemingly seeming-ly impossible and yet won tfhe of the best days of your past yenr was that day when you had to do that which v.:: seemingly too big and gr-ai for your talent and strength. That jwas a day that lifted you to the greater j man or woman one of the cause:; for praise today is that this past year has summoned us all to larger tasks and more critical problems The boy who never has a problem in arithmetic that he cannot solve with ease never climbs the summit of mathematics and the year that only offers you little tasks does not develop you to the full." |
