Show WATER PIPES BIST AND THE ' LARGE STORES OF WRIGHT'S AND ! WATSON-TANNER ARE FLOODED Thousands of dollars worth of KjOOdll in lhe W. I' Wrlaj'ht & Sons' store and the Watson Tanner Store were ruined I his morning between 2 and 'J o clock, when the automatic sprinklers in the I iwo buildings burst as the result of water freezing in the pipes. In the Watson-Tanner store, lhe pipes which burst in tite atiic, released releas-ed hundreds of gallons of water, which .seeped through the floor of the second story and into the sales room below. I Hundreds of dollars' worth of men's I clothing WaS damaged. Ai Wrights, the break occurred abo'-e the third floor The writer. which seeped from ihe third floor to the basement, accumulated to th- : depth of tour feet and extinguished ;the fires in the boiler room. The lire deportment pumped this water from the basement this morning Toys, lingerie, silks, shoes, piece goods and otha r materials of the store I were soaked with water and. in great part, mined The greatest damage was I reported in the silk and dress goods iii partmenl s, The extinguishing of the iires in the basement left the place without Heat and caused dlscomforl to the working force. The water pipe burst at 2 o'clOCk.J Immediately afterwards, ihe water! from the clly mains was shut off but.; with tho closing of the mains, the watt r from the reserve lank on top of the building started to flow and ne-; cessitated the shutting off of even valve in the water-eprJnkler system While this work waa going on. the water continued to tlv. through the bursted pipe and it was several hours before the entire flow of water could be checked. The exact amount of damage tn the two stores is not yet known, but much; of the damage is covered by insurance against water. |
