Show iliSfflTLITO irauiiYs ; FOR FREIGHT Officials ot ttic freight department of the Oregon Short Line from Ogden j End Salt Lake met in Salt Lake yesterday yes-terday and began working out a sche-.' sche-.' dule of "sailing" days for the handling hand-ling of freight over the road. The "sailing day" plan is one that iras inaugurated by the federal railroad rail-road administration for the purpose of bringing about conservation of cars by lull loading of all cars moved. The scheme is to movo freight from distributing dis-tributing points to outside points on ' riven days, so that it may bo moved ' i in full carloads and not In partially aaded cars every day. In attendance at the meeting were 1 A. Pierce, superintendent for the 3ia'h district; T. S. Kinne'rsley, car lerrice agent; Harry Goodwin of the jeneral freight department and H. L. i Sell of the Ogden office. The proposition before the local committee, is to work out a regular schedule of wholesale shipinepts of i freight between points In Utah, so that ! It may be moved in ful carloads only, i Under the old plan, cars have been j loaded every' day, whether they were loaded full or not, but now, -under the 'i full-loading reqoirement, this practice must be abandoned and the handling of freight must be such that it can be ,i moved in full cars. ! To bring this aboutit is proposed by j the committee to work out a schedule '; by which cars for wholesale freight between Ogden and Logan, for in-i in-i stance, will be moved on certain hauls ot the week only. Shippers will be advised of the days on which the cars for Logan are moved and freight will be handled for that point on those days. In this manner the shipments will be accumulated and the cars will bG filled to capacity. A similar plan Trill be followed in handling. freight between be-tween other points. Where there is not enough shipments from the distribution dis-tribution point to the delivery point to fill a car, freight for intermediate points will bo" loaded in the same car l-nd taken out along the way as per Jestination, To work out n satisfactory schedule requires considerable labor and the I :ommlttee will be in session for sev-' sev-' sral days, probably. When it has com-I com-I Pleted its work the schedule will be j psued in printed form for all points 1 hi Utah and will then be forwarded j to all shippers and business concerns for their information and guidance, i The Short Line officials declare that the change in method of handling freight will not occasion any particular particu-lar delay in shipments, because full car shipments are required anyhow by the federal administration and the new plan will simply shift the holding of (he freight to- the shipper instead of having it accumulate in the freight office, waiting for a carload to be In readiness for handling. |
