Rockefeller. In speaking this morning of the communication which appeared yesterday yes-terday in The Standard relative to the killing of dogs on the city streets, Mr. Shorten denied that the animals were being so ruthlessly and brutally slaughtered. "That statement would lead one to believe that the city is a virtual battle front with bullets whizzing all over and yelping curs running amuck to escape the slag! of a heartless crew of gun men." ho said. "It is not true. The department is proceeding to make the city safe in as humane and expeditious expe-ditious a manner as possible. The life of one man like George Chandler, who died a horrible death and left a widow and family, is of more value than all the curs in tho city, and we would perform our duty in a feeble and spineless manner if we allowed such criticism to stop us." |
