Show UU j Theatres IT TME OSPHEUi Bill Hart in "The Cold Deck" without with-out doubt reaches a pinnacle of hitherto hither-to unrealized fame for as this picture was shown last night at the Orpheum scores of people stood throughout the whole show in rapt attention to the superb film, forgetting the discomfort they wero forced to bear. This picture ranks among tho very best western films ever produced. Its attention to chronological detail Is splendid. There are no discordant notes to jar on the idea of fitness of things "western. The scene is laid in the redwoods of California Cali-fornia during the late 50s and the scenes do not jump irrelevantly to a later date. Bill Hart takes the role of "On the Level" Leigh. Jefferson Breckcnridge Leigh of Virginia and California, gentleman, gen-tleman, gambler, quick draw man. It is a simple little plot but very ingeniously ingen-iously wrought. Leigh's invalid sister comes out to California to him from their old Virginia home. He gambles heavily to secure funds to take her to a proper place where she can bo cured. Ho wins a big stake and in his spirit of gamenoss loses it all because a petulant pet-ulant dance hall girl persunded a dealer, deal-er, otherwise square, to cold deck him. Like a true sportsman he does not bat an eyelash but goes homo to find his Jlttlo sister near the point of death. It takes money and nearly a day to bring a doctor from tho nearest town and Leigh is frantic with apprehension because be-cause he has no money. He holds up the Calaveras stage and robs tho passengers. pas-sengers. Another citizen of tho town, howover, pulls a crooked part in tho stage hold-up, secures the strong box with $12,000 and switches tho blame to Lolgh, describing him also as the slayer of Silent Larklns, express messenger. mes-senger. Leigh returns to his cabin to find his little sister dead. He then 1111 gives himself up and preparations are lOI made for his lynching. This does not llilH happen, however.
