State road building in general and the completion of the hard -surfaced highway between Salt Lake and Ogden were given definite def-inite impetus yesterday by a delega-Uop-'dT members of the "Utah State Automobile association, the Commercial Commer-cial club, the Rotary club of Salt Lake and the Weber and Rotary clubs of Ogden, who called in a body on the state road commission and presented a verbal petition that the remaining portion of the Ogden -Salt Lake highway high-way be completed at the earliest date possible. The meeting, which was called for 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon, was held In the board room' on the second floor, Governor Bamberger presiding, as chairman of the road commission. Other members of the road commission commis-sion present were Secretary of State Harden Bennion and State Engineer George M. McGonagle. P. C. Schramm of the Rotary club acted as spokesman for the road enthusiasts, en-thusiasts, stating that, inasmuch as the state road commission had already al-ready gone on record as favorable to the early construction of the remaining remain-ing stretches of tho Ogden-Salt Lake highway, ho was delegaten on behalf of the various clubs and business associations as-sociations represented to ask that such ' work be expedited and that contracts be let and work begun as soon as possible pos-sible next spring. He was assured by State Engineer -McGonagle that the commission was : prepared to advertise for bids at an ' early date and that provision would be : made to get the work of the prelim- . inary surveys so far ahead that actual : road work might begin as early as the middle of next March, If ground conditions con-ditions would permit. It was further explained by Mr. Schramm, in view of the Victory convention con-vention of the Rotarians of tho world, scheduled to convene in Salt Lake June 17, 1910, that It was not only advisable, but practically mandatory unon the commission to have the hhxh- i way in good condition by that date, if Utah and her chief industrial cities were to make the right impression on the visiting delegates. State Engineer McGonagle explained ex-plained it would require perhaps four months to complete the work, but that in his opinion tho greater portion of the road would be ready for the Ro-tarlan Ro-tarlan convention. Mr. Schramm replied that he was perfectly satisfied and indicated that so far as he was concerned the meeting meet-ing was over. "Gentlemen. I wish to sttae that we feel the necessity for road building the same as do you." said Governor Bamberger. "Not only do we wish to complete the road between Ogden and Salt Lake, but we Avant to build good roads in every section of Utah. "I want you to think seriously of another bond Issue of $2,000,000, to be passed at the next general session of the legislature and to be expended in making Utah's highway system as ideal and perfect as it may be, within the next few years. I want you to go out among tho representative men of your organizations and talk good roads and boost for this bond issue." The governor further stated thnt in his poinlon the returning ' soldiers, j having become inured to outdoor lifo. would welcome the chance to work on the highways and that personally he chance at tho job if they wanted it. It was explained by Harden Bennion Ben-nion that the state 'had expended $700,000 of the $2,000,000 bond issue jmsscu u.y un1 mat H'sisiiiLuitj in iuau work. Of the $1,000,000 bonds left, all was now available by a recent ruling I of the capital issues committee, and that steps had been already taken to place $500,000. This statement was quilified by Governor Bamberger, who said that the bonds had been sold at par and accrued interest. State Engineer McGonagle also enlightened en-lightened the petitioners as to the status of post roads and forest projects. pro-jects. Ho said that the state was under un-der contract with the federal government govern-ment to spend $3-10,000 on these roads and that such work was to begin not later than July 1, 1919. In a talk setting forth the aims and aspirations of the Utah State Automobile Auto-mobile club, President Joseph Decker thanked the commissioners for the iri formation vouschafed and the cordial reception extended to the petitioners Individually and collectively.
