Show DESCRIBES ,1 ATTACK HUE BY H OF HE POSTS A letter which describes an encounter encoun-ter with a submarine, was received recently re-cently by Mrs. Samuel J. Small of this city from her son, W. G. Wilton, well known Ogdcn boy, who is now in tho naval service of, the country, on transport trans-port duty. Extracts fr.om the letter are as follows: "I would have told you before about my last trip across, but I didn't think it would get by the censor. "The first thing happened after we took on colored troops and put to sea. After about two days out we were in a storm, and I didn't know whether I was on a submarine or transport. The day after the storm we had a submarine sub-marine attack. That was when they were so active off the 'coast of the States. Then we had another, two days later, but our trusty destroyors kept them off. But the big thing happened hap-pened when we were two days off the const of France. About 5 p. m. a periscope per-iscope was reported by our lookout and tho next thing one of the Hun U-boats came to the surface and fired a torpedo tor-pedo at us. But It went astern of us about fifty feet. Our guns opened fire but didn't do any damage. Then tho submarine became braver and came closer and fired on us with shrapnel, still doing no harm. I "A wireless brought a squadron of . destroyers back to our aid and they sunk the U-boat In a short time, by dropping'ash cans' on it. We call the depth bombs 'ash cans,' as they resemble re-semble them. "The submarine was of the super-typo super-typo tho largest ones made. "It will bo great bringing the sol- ' dier3 back. We can sail with lights , and get some sleep. "The last trip I was 'first aid man' of a No. 4 gun tjie one that has done the most of the firing. "It will surely seem good when all of the Ogden boys can come back and I hope my ship brings them over." |
