Show RESOLUTIONS I SALT LAKE GUI The following resolutions were passed by a patriotic mass meeting InSalt Lake last evening "The United States of America Is not a warlike or military government. It has engaged in four wsrs with foreign for-eign powers; the first for independence, independ-ence, ihe second for freedom of the seas and the right of American sailors and citizens to enjoy that freedom; the third for the protection of Americans Ameri-cans on neutral and foreign soil; the fourth for the interest of suffering humanity. hu-manity. "Whereas, the United States government govern-ment now appears to be on the BVe of another war into which It is being forced to reassert all these principles of national right and honor; to safeguard safe-guard our prestige and perpetuity as a nation; to defend the freedom of our commerce; to compel respect for our long established rights; to protect the lives and liberties of our citizens on the high seas; to rebuke aggressive tyranny ty-ranny for its brutal disregard of the claims and pleadings of humanity; and, "Whereas, In Its relation to other governments, the United States, for two years past, has borne and is now bearing with dignity and credit the gravest responsibilities this or any other republic has ever been called upon to face; and, "Whereas, every honorable effort has been made conscientiously to keep this country from being drawn into the most savage sanguinary, destruc-tive destruc-tive and unnecessary, but far-reaching war the world has ever witnessed; and, "Whereas, the German government has denied to us the freedom of the seas; has destroyed our ships and shipping; and. without justification or warning, has ordered or approved the treacherous assassination of American seamen and citizens on neutral waters outside of any defined or pretended zone of danger; and. "Whereas, under the guise of friendship friend-ship and the hospitality of the United Hes. ine uerman government nas, I i through its accredited official repre-: repre-: sentatives, plotted to embarrass and injure this nation by fomenting racial and political Intrigues among our peo pie by the use of money or the prom- ise of support, by the establishment of I I secret cabals, hostile organizations and schools of spies within our borders; I J by inflaming the minds of people in ! foreign lands, and Inciting them to I make war upon this country': and, "Whereas, every open or covert attack at-tack on this government or on those j who direct Its destinies in war nat l.urally is coustrued by enemies as fur- 1 nishlug evidence of disunion and weak-nesSi weak-nesSi invites insult and attack and . should be rebuked and suppressed as ' a potential cause leading to war; and, "Whereas, the loyalty, unity and sol-, sol-, idarlty of the American people in sup- I port of the president and congress in I such a grave crisis is a most effective , barrier to the insolence, oppression and assault of foreign foes; and, "Whereas, the time has now come , for all patriotic Americans to take a stand with the republic and the flag and the president, and to so announce I their decision to the world; therefore, be it j "Resolved, by this mass convention of , representative citizens of the state of I Utahi assembled in the tabernacle at Salt Lake city on this 26th day of March. 1917, that we solemnly reaffirm reaf-firm our allegiance to the flag and the republic; our faith in the constitution of the United States; our devotion to the principles of human liberty, and to the rights of the weak to immunity from torture, slavery, debasement and destruction by the strong, and we solemnly sol-emnly pledge ourselves hero and now to loyally support the president of this republic .n whatever course may become be-come necessary to enforce our rights as a people, to preserve our honor as a nation and to protect the lives of our fellow citizens at home or abroad, on land or sea; 'Resolved, by this mass convention of these resolutions bo prepared for pres- entation to the president of the United!
