H Heywood, in a spppch last Friday pveninp, at the University club H banquet, slated there was an or- H panized pfforf in Ogd I to work fl against public impnni ii nts His H remarks were published in the I Examiner Saturdaj niorninc and, no doubt, were read by a ronsid-1 ronsid-1 crable number of persons. I "Feeling certain that the mayor's H remarks were directpd at the Tnx- payers' lpague, recently orpanizrd, I wp repard it as our duty, as offi- )ers of the league, to answer the accusation. B ' The league desires to say to the peoplp of Ocden, through thp medium of your newspaper, that ' Mr. Heywood and any others who j entertain similar ideas are mistak- J en. "The object of the Taxpayers' league, is to work for the upbuild-! upbuild-! Ing of Ogden, not only for Im- j provements, such as sewers, pave- ments. etc., but for the betterment i of the people, morally, education- I ally, physically and financially, i "Because we are opposed to Mr. Heywood and his colleague, Mr. Jones, in their policy of imposing j thpir ideas, regardless of proper- j ty owners' protests, in theii auto- cratic polio in resppct of paving j district No. 125, does not. mean the I ments. "Thp league certainly Is opposed to placing an unnecessary burden bur-den upon the people against the expressed protests of a majority. "Why have a law, if the mayor and Commissioner Jones can arbitrarily ar-bitrarily set it aside and drlarp -that the improvpmeni shall be made whether thp people, who must shoulder the financial burden, bur-den, want it or not 9 "We want big men to come to Ogden, to do big things. We want big men at the head of the city government, but the people don't want men who have such an p.xalt-ed p.xalt-ed opinion of their own greatness that when thpy arp plpcted to office of-fice they think they can spf aside the expressed wishes of a majority major-ity of the people, who also think they hnve a right to temporarily suspend tht-- operation of a law "It is tho purpose of the Taxpayers' Tax-payers' league to imprpss upon the present or any futurp administration administra-tion thp fact that they are the servants ser-vants of the people and not their masters. "History is replete with examples exam-ples of men who have attpmpted arbitrarily to over-ride the wishes of the people, setting themsehes up as supreme dictators, always with unhappy and disastrous results. re-sults. "Again, wp declare we are not opposed to Improvements, but are only opposed to the unjust methods meth-ods which city officials somptimps attpmpt to adopt in carrying out lhr ir own Ideas of improvements. The league is heartily In favor of and will work for all civic improvements im-provements which arp desired by a majority of the people. "The lpague invltps all cltizpns who are in sympathy with its be-nefippnt be-nefippnt purposes to join and increase in-crease its power for public good. Applicants do not have to pay anything any-thing to join. "Ogden has sorely nppdpd such an organization many times in Hip past, and doubtless will need It throughout the future. It is there-fore, there-fore, designed to be permanent. Such an organization will assist in die accomplishment of much good, and in the eradication of much evil, if the people will only realize the power they possess and work unitedlv to assert that power.
