Show I THE ADVANTAGES OF A CROOKED RIVER. When travelers leaving Ogden over the Southern Pacific reach Wells, Ne-1 Ne-1 , vada, they are at the headwaters of the Humboldt river, a stream which is declared to bo the crookedest In the lil world. It Is one of the few rivers In n the United States flowing from east H to west. Here Is a description as given by one of the Southern Pacific men: i At one place adjacent to the rall-a rall-a road, between two points two and a n half miles apart, the river's length Is t eight miles and by actual count its i course is alternately north twenty-five twenty-five times, east eighteen times, south p thirty times and west forty-one times; c also it may be stated that at thirty-li thirty-li three different points it is within one 15 hundred and fifty feet or less of it-J it-J self, the current flowing in opposite directions by these points. This "runaway "run-away river" crosseB the Southern Pa-cifio Pa-cifio tracks twenty-eight times, necessitating ne-cessitating as many bridges, costing in all $651,000. By way of showing how completely "locoed" it is, the Humboldt ends its courso by running Into the middle of the desert and corkscrewing cork-screwing its way out of sight in a huge sink. It is humorously said that on account of its devious way, this stream is a sportsman's paradise. Ducks and geeso after following Its treacherous courso a short distance, become deluded de-luded and forget their direction, returning re-turning five or six times to the point at which they were disturbed. Fish experience the-same difficulty and become be-come so perplexed that they refuse to swim. Tho Indians have discovered discover-ed this and simply net the fish while they are dazed. |
