Aug. 5,Tho completed census returns show the Salt Lake City school population for 191G to be 27,346, as compared with 2G 347 fori 1915, an increase of 939 school chil-dren. chil-dren. Tho enumeration Includes children chil-dren between the ages of 6 and IS years. The enumeration by precincts is aB follows: Precinct No. 1, 11,255, an Increase of 670; precinct No 3, 4208, an increase of 120; precinct No. 4, 33GS, an increase in-crease of 226; precinct No.. 5, 2041 a decrease of 96. - , . In this census the only precinct to lose In school population Is tho fifth which Includes the territory lying be' tween State street and the city limits m the east and between South Tem. pie and Third South streets, the school census; that Is, the school as a good index of the city's population, popula-tion, and from tho figures presented in the present census L. P. Judd, clerk of the school board, figures the present pres-ent population of Salt Lake City to bo 123,000. This is to be taken as a co servatlvc estimate of the population, for the reason that tho multiple figure fig-ure is placed lower than that usually employed. In most cities, and in fact counties, the factor five is employed in determining the population from the shcool census; that is, the school census is multiplied by five to obtain the city's population.. |
