In reply to the charge that he had refused to answer certain questions put by the Democrats regarding "What he would have done had he been president during the first two years of the European war," appears the statement thatiMr. Hughes has at no time sought to evade any of the Issues. Rather he has answered all Mill ii iii mm ii in rrt nil. , . i n. questions as they presented themselves them-selves in logical order. Being a methodical sort of man, Mr. Hughes' proceedure is necessarily methodical, He takes thingB as they come and acts upon them wisely and judiciously, as his record shows. The Republican nominee for president presi-dent answered the question regarding the Lusltanla disaster with the statement state-ment that it never would have ' occurred oc-curred had he been the president of the United States at the time. Tn a recent address- In Chicago Mr. Hughes, touching on the catastrophe, said in words to this effect, "Had I been the president of the United States during the past few years, no such disaster as the Lusltanla disaster disas-ter would have occurred. You ask me how T would have prevented It? My answer Is that I would have made conditions right before May, 1 91 si, when the disaster occurred. Measures Meas-ures for safeguarding American citizens citi-zens at home, abroad and on the high seas would have been in effect. No foreign nation would have dared to allow any of its agents to commit such a crime, because laws enforced would have commended a wholesome respect for American rights. Our foreign policy pol-icy will take care of itself, It we have a "policy, and back up our guarantees with the force that is the underlying principle of true Americanism." Mr. Hughes answered this question tion the same as he has answered others. oth-ers. He can be depended upon to answer an-swer all other questions accordingly. When he finishes the doubtful voter will be convinced that the nominee Is making no claims for himself that he will not live up to. |
