Show CHESTER HOFF IS CAUSE OFV ICTORY San Francisco Defeated by Salt Lake Utes 5 to 3 Utes Wobbled at Times, CHESTER DOFF Salt Lake, Oct . 22. Bill Bernard wanted to sec if the Seals always perform the way they did last Thursday Thurs-day afternoon when Chester Hoff occupied oc-cupied the center of the diamond, so Chester was again sent out to hurl for the Utes. Skipper Bill's curiosity was satisfied, for when the score board attendant had hung up the last cipher for the visitors In the ninth inning the story which the fans read out there was Salt Lake 5, San Francisco Fran-cisco 3. That score also meant several other things. In the first place, it gave Salt Lake the series with four victories out of the six games played and, secondly, sec-ondly, It hoisted the "Utes Into fourth place with less than one point separating separat-ing them from the Seals. 'The affair at Majestic park was almost as full of the thrills as a Drury Lane melodrama, although the action of the whole thing was marred by a lot of hobbling and booting which made the Salt Lake chances at several points appear somewhat wobbly. Thej Salt Lake performers were not the only offenders, for the Seals offset every leathery play which the locals made by one which was nearly as tough. "Red" Oldham mado his second appearance ap-pearance for the series and his performance per-formance could hardly be termed of that starry nature which would enable him to take up his rosidence on any of the adjacent planets. His generalship general-ship on several occasions was pretty faulty and he was lucky to pull out without a larger score being hung on him. At two different times ho walked a batsman with malice aforethought, afore-thought, each time filling the bases.1 On one occasion he pulled himself out successfully through some bum club swinging by the Utes, hut at the other time one runner scored at a result of his tactics. In all during the afternoon after-noon he doled out ten blngles, which, with the errors of his teammates, brought in the five runs of the locals. Chester Hoff saw fit to allow no trace of a hit In five of the nine innings. in-nings. The third frame was the only one in which he allowed more than one bingle and at no time was he in more serious trouble than having a .runner on first' base and one residing 'at the second station.
