Raymond Ruff Schwind. best known as Raymond Ray-mond Swobodn, arrested on suspicion of having started the firo aboard the steamship La Touralne and now charged with espionage, has been confronted con-fronted by Major Wepring. who identified iden-tified him as having been In his employ em-ploy when the major was manager of the Russo-Chiuese bank at Shanghai, according to the Petit Journale The newspaper asserts the prisoner admitted he had been convicted In the consular court, at Shanghai under the name of Schwind and stated then he was born in Hamburg, but he is said to have explained to the French military mili-tary authorities that the name and birthplace were assumed. The prisoner has written to Major .Tulien of the Paris permanent court-martial court-martial protesting against his long detention de-tention declaring tbat the charge of setting fire to the Touralne was trumpe-d up out of spite by a fellow passenger and that the charge of espionage es-pionage is altogether preposterous. |
