"That H letter expressed my sentiments then," he said, "and I would write the same H While the governor declined to dis-cuss dis-cuss the possibility of his going to Syracuse, it was declared by an au-thoritative au-thoritative source that be had re- ceived neither a subpoenae nor a telo- H gram asking him to testify. Whitman to send an answer , I by last midnight to a telegram invit- H ing him to appear as a witness The governor, it was said, was asked to appear as a witness in rebuttal and 1 testify regarding the authenticity of JH a letter which was represented as hav H ing been signed by him while he was H district attorney of New York. H This letter, which was addressed to I Charles H Duell, Jr , of New York, stated that the time was ripe for H Progressive-Republicans and Progres- H slves to rid the state of corruption ll and the men and policies responsible sj H I for such corruption were not confined 'H to one party. The first witness was Harvey O Hinman He said he remembered what went on In the senate in 1911 when a United States senator to succeed suc-ceed f'hauncey M. Depew was chosen Counsel for Colonel Roosevelt then read what purported to be a recorc: of tho votes candidates received. All the candidates were Democrats except ex-cept Mr Depew, Mr. Hinman said Early votes read showed that William Wil-liam F. Sheehan and Mr Depew were the closest contestants In a later vote the name of James A O'Gorman appeared. Justice O'Qorman was victorious |
