Show PRESIDENT WILL VETOJEASDRE Hears Arguments in Favor of "Literacy Test," But Re-Mains Re-Mains Obdurate. WILL RETURN BILL Message to Congress Will Explain Ex-plain Opposition and Reason Rea-son for Using Veto Power. Washington, Jan. 27 It was stated authoritatively today that President Wilson will veto the immigration bill because of the literacy test. This became known aftr a conference between be-tween Mte president and committees of both houses of congress, which had the measure in charge For nearly two hours the president listened to arguments by Representa tive6 Burnett of Alabama, Sabath of Illinois. Gardner of .Massachusetts and Senators Lodge of Massachusetts and Robinson of Arkansas. During the hearing Senator Lodge voiced what some of those present construed as an intimation to the president pres-ident that, If the bill were vetoed, it would be repassed by both senate and house. Representative Sabath alone asked the president to veto the bill. Senator Lodge told the president he believed the literacy test was the be-,t feasible method for restricting immigration immi-gration Mr. Sabath contended there was no public demand for the bill and Senator Lodge replied that the over-I over-I whelming vote in its favor in both i houses of congress was proof to the I literacy test and plans to return the bill to congress tomorrow- with a mes-j mes-j sage giving his opposition to the test as his reason for his veto. oo |
