Show DEMOCRATIC LAW FAILS IN REVENUE Washington, June 30. The husiness year of the federal government came to an end tonight with treasury officials offi-cials still unable to determine how much of a deficit the accounts of receipts re-ceipts and expenditures for the last twelve months will show. Internal revenue offices throughout the country telegraphed that they would remain open until a late hour tonight and that figures on the last day's returns would not be available until some time tomorrow. The deficit today, exclusive of disbursements dis-bursements on account of the Panama Pan-ama canal, was well over $75,000,000, hut officials were confident that figure fig-ure will bo materially reduced. The Income tax up until today had produced pro-duced only about $40,000,000, but estimates es-timates of the total return from this source have agreed on something over $80,000,000. Congress amonded the law so that persons or corporations corpora-tions who do not pay until July 10 are not subject to penalty, and there is no way of telling how many are waiting until the last moment to pay. No Need for Bond Issue. Estimates of the treasury deficit today to-day varied between $40,000,000 and $60,000,000. Receipts in the last few days, however, have made It apparent that there will be no present need for a bond Issue, looked upon as a probability proba-bility a few months ago. One fact that officials do not overlook over-look in considering the present condition condi-tion of the treasury Is that the post-office post-office department has run behind somewhere between $10,000,000 and $15,000,000. Many reasons are given for this, among them the condition of business during the first few months of the war, the closing of the stock exchange for a long period, and the falling off In foreign business. Customs Receipts Diminished. Customs receipts of tho government have apparently not been far under what was expected by officials a few months ago. Secretary McAdoo estimated esti-mated that customs would bring In about $240,000,000 and It seemed probable prob-able tonight that the total would not be below $210,000,000. From all Information avallablo now, the emergency tax law has not been such a good revenue producer as was expected. The Internal revenue bureau bu-reau has not divided receipts from this source from those from ordinary Internal revenue taxes, but It is pretty well understood that the law lias not lived up to expectations. Receipts from the taxes on whisky, in particular, particu-lar, have shown a falling off. |
