Show CORRUPTION OF CHICAGO POLICE Chicago, Nov. 23. "Jimmy" Ryan, convicted clairvoyant swindler, was again a witness today against John J. Halpln, former captain of police, on trial for alleged bribery. Ryan told of "working" under the alias of "Pro-feBSor "Pro-feBSor T. Charles Crane" and of meeting meet-ing in his brother, Frank's clairvoyant clairvoy-ant parlor Walter O'Brien, a former subordinate of Halpln's and recently found guilty of bribery. O'Brien is a nephew of P. D. O'Brien who was suspended last night as chief of detectives on charges that he had been instrumental In raisins a forced fund for the defense of his nephew and other policemen involved in the clairvoyant graft cases. John E. Northup, attorney for Hal-pin, Hal-pin, charged that the suspension of Captain O'Brien had been emdnecred so as to intimidate policemen who might be called to testify for his client. cli-ent. Frank Johnston, first assistant state's attorney, entered a vigorous denial to this insinuation. Ryan testified that Walter O'Brien told him to go ahead with plans for an elaborate "place" on North State street, but to "be careful" because in that location he would be under the boss nose. oo |
