Show BRITISH SHIP ASHQREIN GALE Cargo of Gasoline Ignites and Only Two of Crew Are Saved. Barrow. Dec 8, via London, 11 16 a. m. The British steamer Vedra, from Port Arthur. Texas, with a cargo car-go of gasoline, went ashore near here this morning in a heavy gale. The cargo Ignited and of the crew f) :i, ni' ii on boo rd the Vedra only two were saved and they were severely severe-ly burned. The , conflagration was caused by the gasoline escaping aud flowing into the engine room, where it became be-came ignited The surface of the sea was covered with burning oil and the escape of the mien was cut off. 'Two life boats reached the scene bul the flaming oil on the surface of the water made it impossible for them to approach. Several members of the crew jumped overboard but they either were drowned or burned to death. Only two men out of the ship's crew managed to escape alive. I They were picked up by the lifo boat and are now in a hospital. The steamer Vedra left Port Arthur Ar-thur Tor lyondon, November 13, aud passed Norfolk on the 21 Bt She was reported yesterday as passing Tusknr in the Irish Sea, which would iudleate that she bad changed her destination i-nd was bound for aorae port on the v.est coast of England The Vedra was under the command of Captain Brewster.
