Show RATES ARE TO i BE COT DOWN Washington. D. C, June 23 The members of the interstate commerce commission began preparations today to-day to put the edict of the supreme court of the United States in the Intermountain rate case into eff i I The unquestioned and complete power given the commission over interstate in-terstate railroad rates through the court decision will result In sweeping sweep-ing rate reductions on 1 long haul' freight to Spokane. Salt Lake City. Reno, Butte, Billings, Denver and many other cities between the Rocky mountains and the Pacific ocean Railroads affected by the supreme court's decision will be required by the commission to file new tariffs reducing rates on transcontinental shipments to the intermountain ci; les. Officials of the commission stated today that this will be the first im j mediate effect of the decision In many cases the reductions are expected ex-pected to equal 20 per cent, while there will be greater reductions in freight rates in other instances The far-reaching effect of the decision, de-cision, according to officials of the commission, is the declaration that all power to suggest and prescribe rate changes has been transferred from the railroads to the commission by congress. This declaration makes completely dominant the authority of the commission to fix interstate rates including action upon the 5 per cent rate advance, which many jf the shippers denied during the testimo ny given before the commission. oo |
