Show oo QUARTER MILLION DOLLAR PAVING JOB IS LET Salt Lake. July 16. -Contract for paving Eighth West street, from Second Sec-ond to Tenth South streets, and Fourth South, from Sixth to Eighth West, was let yesterday by the city commission to George A Heman on a bid of $121,829.94. A straight Utah rock asphalt is the material to be used in preference to the other two alternative specifications specifi-cations calling for the use of rock asphalt mixed with a bituminous concrete con-crete material. Heman was low on the straight rock asphalt, though Mo ran, with a bid of $124,998.03 was low on the other two alternatives The city engineer, Sylvester Q Cannon, had recommended that Moran Mo-ran be given the contract and that the bituminous concrete mixture bo used Objection was made to this on the ground that such a mixture mifiht infringe on patented paving materi als. The city attorney gave It as the opinion that It would not. Nevertheless, Richard p Morris street commissioner, moved that the bid go to Heman. W. j. Barrette attorney for Moran. urged that Mo ran be given the contract, declaring that any liability that might arise from possible infringement of a pat en would be Moran's concern am not the city's. Commissioners Welh and Shearman moved that the matte; be referred to the committee of thi whole but the yiotion was lost b vote of 3 to 2, and Heman was giver the contract by unanimous vote. |
