Show uu PRESIDENT HAS .A CONFERENCE Washington June 5 Teadert among the senate Democrats gathered at the White House tonight to talk with President Wilson about tne legislation leg-islation the administration wants to go through before congress adjourns. The anti-trust bills passed by tne house, or legislation similar in a gen eral way. are the only measures on the program to be insisted upon. The president told the senators, who Included the members of the Democratic steering committee and the chairmen of the Judiciary and interstate in-terstate commerce committees, that while be joined with members of congress con-gress in anxiety for an early adjournment, adjourn-ment, he strongly felt that the antitrust anti-trust bills should be passed during the present session. The conference lasted until late in the night Those taking part were: Democratic Leader Kern, Senators Hoke Smith of Georgia. Owen, Thomas, Thom-as, Martin, O'Gorman. Newlands. Chamberlain, Clarke of Arkansas, and Culberson. The consensus of opinion at the conference as expressed by several senators afterward was that there should be little difficulty In getting the anti-trust measures reported out of committee and in passing them through the senate. Varying opinions were expressed as to the probable time of adjournment, but it was generally agreed that the session should be continued until the antitrust measures are finally disposed dis-posed of The president was told that the interstate in-terstate commerce committee in proceeding pro-ceeding rapidly with the railroad se curitles bill and should be able to report to the senate within the next week or ten days The same report was made on the general trust bills now being considered consid-ered by the judiciary committee. Six sections of this bill were disposed or today, it was said The Democratic senators also told the president that there seemed to be no general disposition on tho part or the Republicans to make the antitrust anti-trust bills a party issue. Mr. Wll son was much pleased with the fact that the majority of the Republicans Re-publicans voted for the trade commission com-mission bill in committee and the apparent ap-parent readiness of the minority to co-operate in settling the anti trust question wa6 cited as tbe principal reaaon why there should be no great delay In bringing the secslon or congress con-gress to an end. |
