Retired arm;, officers may be rudely aroused from their well earned leisure and be forced to take command of troops in certain contingencies, if the war department Induces congress to enact the necessary neces-sary legislation The department would be empowered to place a re tired army officer In command of 1 military post when a movement of troops leaveB the post without its garrison. The law, at present, pro vides that "officers retired from ae tlve sprvlce shall be withdrawn fur command, ' but permits their assignment assign-ment to "staff duties not involving service with troops." As the command of a post, even when its garrison is away, involves command of certain enlisted men of tho medical and quartermaster corps as well as certain other enllBted men of the line, the proposed legislation would be necessary to overcome the present prohibition of duties "involv Ing service with troops 00 |
