He then presented the report of the stake presidency, which, In part, was as follows: "The presidency of the stake feels encouraged by the conditions as the I find them at the present time In reviewing the stake and the work that U being done therein, we have found a spirit of love harmony and good-fellowship prevailing both among the presiding officers and the members of the church, who reside in the stake "Eight ward conferences havo hr n held, at which members of the presidency pres-idency and high council have been ij present and at each conference the ' general, stake and local officers were sustained by unanimous vote of the I members "Since our last conference the Og-I Og-I den Stake has suffered a great loss I in the death of Elder Isaac L. Clark 1 a member of the High Council, which occurred on August 26th. We have I greatly missed him because of his faithfulness His judgment could fi-j fi-j ways be relied upon and his council was safp and sound his service was I unselfish and his devotion to the I principles of righteousness was ! complete This acancy was filled I by advancing Elder James Storey to J1 a position In the council "It has also been found necessary II to make other changes in the High ' I Council. William If. McKay, stake i superintendent of Sunday schools, has been released from his position at alternate high councilor, so as to ilevoto all of his efforts to the work of the Sunday schools. Elders Joseph Jo-seph G. Evans, (ieorgo C. Hobson and Lawrence W Richards have been selected to nerve as alternate high councilors. "In thre of thf wards changes hare been made in tho bishoprics since our last report. On the 16th of September the member of the Liberty Lib-erty ward were universally grieved by the death of William G Penrod. first counselor to the bishop and we reel, now, a tlngo of sadness in referring re-ferring to his demise for he was one of the most faithful among men, a wise counselor, an earnest defender of the right and a man much loved by all who knew him. Dald E. Chard has been advanced to fill tho position left vacant by Elder Penrod I and James L Shaw has been sub- j tained by the ward members and set ; apart by the stake authorities to act 1 as second counselor to the bishop of kthe ward. 'Joseph E. Wright, owing to his j having moved from the ward, has been honorably released from the po- j i sitlon of first counselor to tho bishop i and Thomas Clark ha.3 been appoint-Sd appoint-Sd and sustained to fill his position, j "In the Huntsville ward It has hr-en found necessary' to sustain two new counselors to the bishop, as the former for-mer counsellors. A J. Anderson and Adam W. Schade. have removed from the ward The two n-w counsellors are David I Tracy and Alma Peterson. Peter-son. "Other changes that have been made are as follows: Releases. Mrs Sarah M Taylor from the position of Relief Society Stake president Mrs. Catherine G. Wright, religion class stake president; Thomas Clark, second assistant superintendent of assistant superintendent of the stake Y. M M I A. "The following have ben selected and sustained to fill th vacancies Mrs IsabelP- Foulger, relief society president, Mrs Annie M. Farr, religion re-ligion class president Angus E. Berlin, Ber-lin, assistant superintendent of Sun-daj Sun-daj schools and Moroni Olson, assistant as-sistant superintendent of the Y. M. I M I A. j "Mrs. Foulger has chosen as her (counsellors Nellie Becraft and Yin-c Yin-c R Barker and Olive C Belnap and Grace j, Spangenberg will act a6 counsellors to Mrs Farr President Evans also gave a detailed de-tailed statistical report which showed Increased efficiency in the work of all the organizations, an increased j -r-take membership of 102 personp. a splendid condition In the department of ward teaching and a good financial finan-cial condition. Several new departures de-partures in the line of systematized work for the benefit of the people of the stake have ben recently inaugurated inaugu-rated and are progressing nicely " fter he had concluded reading the report President Evans bore a strong testimony of appreciation for the assistance as-sistance given him by his two counsellors coun-sellors and the other stake officials. Following a choral number by the choir, President Evans introduced Elder lawrence Richards, who has recently returned from the Eastern States mission Elder Richards, In a sincere and I eloquent manner, spoke of his ple.is-I ple.is-I ure at being home again and among (lod's chosen people for, he said, his experiences In teaching and living according to the principles of the Gospel as advocated by the Church , of Jesus Christ of Lattor-da Salnt.s I had been, to him. a testimony of lis divinity. Elder Richards also spoke briefly ! of conditions as found by the missionaries mis-sionaries in the Eastern states and , paid a tribute to the memory of the late President Pen B Rich. Elder B. H. Roberts was the next speaker and spoke for nearly an hour I on the necessity of reading the scrlp- tures. His discourse included a remarkable re-markable exposition of the Bible from all points of view and greatly Impressed his hearers. The benediction was offered by ' Elder Thomas Clark of the Sixth ward. The afternoon session was opened with an Invocation by Elder N' J. Harris and, following the singing of a chorus by the choir, the general and stake authorities were presented by Reuben T Evans and were unanimously unani-mously sustained. President Charles C Richards spoke briefly, expressing his pleasure pleas-ure at the fine result being obtained In the Make and hoping that continued con-tinued Improvement would b.1 made He also spoke impressively of the value of the Mutual Improvement Era" as a publication that should be in every homo because of Its high literary and moral tone. Elder B. H. Roberts occupied the remaining portion of the meeting and delivered a powerful sermon taking as his thftme the question, "Are the benefits derived from working work-ing for the establishment of the Gospel Gos-pel of Christ and tho betterment of His children worth the time and means that an individual puts Into I 1 1 V H Ul ft In an earnest and eloquent manner, man-ner, that made a deep impression on his hearers, he pictured the blessing that are everlasting and with many quotations from the scriptures, he told how dear to the master was every ev-ery Individual soul. The question of the benefits derived de-rived from the payment of tithes, he Illustrated by the parallel question of th.- pament of taxes to the state The one law, he said, that granted to the people of this nation religious freedom, alone was value received for all the taxes that were imposed upon the people and their payment should be willingly made If such great protection pro-tection Is given by obeying the laws of man. how much greater is the safety that lies in obeying the laws of God President Thomas E. McKay made a fevs closing remarks thanking the speakers for their inspiring addresses address-es and the Tabernacle choir for it., beautiful singing on |
