Show COLORED MJN KILLS HIS WIFE 11 ENDS HIS OWN LIFE The culmination or a long drawn out quarrel between Charles Johnson, a negro cook on a dining car, and his wife came Saturday at 5 p. m., when at the family homo, No. 137 Twenty-eighth Twenty-eighth Btreet, the colored man shot tho woman three times and then attempted at-tempted suicide by the use of a gun a penknife and a razor. According to a later Investigation tho cause of the trouble was Jealousy on tho part of the husband for attentions atten-tions supposed to have been given his wife by another colored man A let- imuiiu in jonnson s pocket at the hospital, where he was removed af ter the shooting, addressed to Leo Winterbauer contained $70, with n request to Winterbauer to gh e tho same to Undertaker C T Llndquist The woman, It is said, left her husband hus-band several months ago and John son. who has been paying for his home on the Installment plan, was apparently afraid that she would get the home and leave him in the lurch Shortly after hie return home on Saturday from a trip, another quarrel ensued between them and, while his wife was lying on a couch in the fn-Ing fn-Ing room, the man deliberately walked over to her. placed a revolver near her body and fired threo times The first bullet struck the forearm and the two others entered her breast She staggered to the rront door, then on to the porch, from which sho fell to the lawn on tbe west side of the house where she remained until carried car-ried Into the home of the Fair famllv at the corner Immediately after shooting his wife and without waiting to see if hie rash deed had accomplished its purpose, pur-pose, Johnson shot himself in the left breast and then cut his windpipe with a penknife and razor He was re moved to the hospital where be died at 7:30 yesterday morning after suffering suf-fering Intense agony. Though Mrs. Johnson waa a mem- ber of tho Pastor Browns church, the husband was not, and for some time past had not been on speaking terms with the pastor. He met Rev Brown and shook hands with him and statod that be was sorry that any difference had existed between them and that he intended to join the church and be a good member He also said that his home life was not happy and that he was going to Omaha. It is the belief of the officers who investigated the affair, that he J Btaggered in to the bedroom, secured the raror front tbe bureau drawer and then almost completely severed his windpipe. He was unconscious when the police reached him Mrs Johnson was taken to the hospital hos-pital In the auto-patrol which returned Immediately and took the husband to the same place The Johnsons were married about four years ago In Pocatello, Idaho This was the second marriage of Mrs. Johnson, whose first husband was Jo seph Bell. She was apparently an excellent housewife, as everything In the house, was clean and tidy Sheriff DeVlne found two bottles of morphine and a set of needles In a drawer of the bureau, but it Is not known whether either the man or woman was addicted to tho use or the drug oo |
