J Dr. Jane Skotfield of Sa,lt Lake I , made quite a long address, advocat- ing the eradication of any tiling that would detract from the beauty of the J ; city or prove harmful to the healch I : of Its citizens. She urged in pdr- i ticular the removal of the billboards. U saying that they did more to make If a city unsightly than any other thing and that they were also bad from tho It standpoint of health. i Mrs. P. N. Cook, sanltarv inspector l of Salt Lake City, also addressed the I v meeting. Her remarks were along I the lines of sanitation aa a means i of civic welfare and suggested that I '1 the women's clubs form committees J. to investigate conditions in the I slaughter houses, dairies, meat mar- I ; kets and other places of food supply ; iu and around tho city and, where I unsanitary conditions exist, insist I that they be rectified. She made spe- I ' clal reference to tp.e crusade against I the "fly" which was in progress In I Salt Lake City last year and which 5 would be followed up again this year. I The most effective results In a move- ment to exterminate the flies, she Ksaid, was to kill them jugt after they come out of their places of concealment conceal-ment in the spring, before they can lay their eggs. She said that the Women's clubs of Salt Lake and the Salt Lake Commercial club were working work-ing together in a business-like way toward the desired end, regarding the $ cleaning up of the city and the ex-! ex-! termination of the flies and suggested that the Women's clubs and Weber club of Ogden get together for tho same purpose. Mrs. R. B. Porter, president of the Ogden Civic league, gave an excellenl talk in which she urged the beautify-' beautify-' ing of the city and gave some good ! suggestions for the citizens to work I on. One of her suggestions was that w the yards, lawns and all out-of-the-way places be thoroughly cleaned and the 'i rubbish be plied up on the streets by ! Arbor day and then the city com-I com-I mission to have it hauled away. If this bo done, she said, It would aid , greatly in beautifying the city. Pleasing musical selections by the Industrial school band, the Ogden high school glee club, Ogden high school orchestra, Tabernacle Organist Sam F, Wbitaker and the Misses El- sie Shorten and Irma Browning were I . greatly enjoyed, by all present and, as a closing number, the assembly sang "America," accompanied by tho Industrial school band. |
