Show uo WHEN THE WOMEN START TO CLEAN OGDEN Among the speakers at the Tabernacle Taber-nacle yesterday afternoon was Mrs. R. B. Porter, who advocated that the yards, lawns and out-of-the-way places throughout the city be cleared of rubbish, rub-bish, the accumulations piled on the streets and, on Arbor day, the city provide team6 and wagons to carry away the trash. That Is an excellent excel-lent recommendation. Tho filth that accumulates around the homes In w nter Is in spring the broeding refuge of flies, mosquitoes and other disease-conveying Insects, and, wore the rubbish to be carted away by Arbor Ar-bor day, a big part of our fly nuisance nuis-ance would be eliminated. Mrs. P. N. Cook, of the sanitary department of Salt Lake City, advocated advo-cated tho forming of committees by the women's clubs to investigate conditions con-ditions In the slaughter houses, dairies, meat markets and other places of food supply. We urge on the members ot the local clubs that this suggestion be not disregarded. A former sanitary inspector, of Ogden, Og-den, reciting what he saw when he first entered tho employ of the city, told us conditions in some of the restaurants, res-taurants, bakeries and other places where food was prepared and served were nauseating. Ho came upon a nest of mice in a flour bin, saw flies swarming over pies and meat, found filth being splashed over vegetables, visited a slaughter house where the noisome odors were sickening and files were present In countless numbers; num-bers; saw men at work preparing food for public consumption whose personal appearances were suggestive sugges-tive of dirt and disease. This Inspector Inspec-tor said the public had not the faintest faint-est conception of the unclean food stuff offered for sale or the menace to health the uncleanllness presented. Now all this may have changed for the better In the past two or three years, but we doubt It The women, In their energetic way, can soon determine de-termine whether there is cause for complaint. A committee from tho clubs could be provided with authority author-ity to pry Into all sources of food supply and the findings might prove a senBation. oo |
