Show I THEATERS AT THE ORPHEUM. Even without Joe Maxwell's players, play-ers, the Empress vaudeville bill that opened yesterday at the Orpheum theater would be one of rare excel lenco, for there Is another act that would stand as a headliner. judging from tbe approval it received at the first performances. This is "The Golden Wedding." which Is presented by Beulah Gwynn and David Gossett and which proved to have both the essence of clean rich comedy and deep sentiment in equal volume The sketch Is produced Io a good old-fashioned old-fashioned home setting and the two who present it are finished portray ers of old-age types. The singing of several old songs by the couple to an organ accompaniment by Miss Gwynn was a rare treat and seemed to reach the heart of everyone present. The Maxwell act, "I've Got It." though the rest of the bill is extra good, Is well entitled to head-line honors hon-ors It is a tabloid drama in three scenes, all of them excellently set. the second the exterior of St. Greg ory's church being especially beautiful. beau-tiful. The drama is ono containing both comedy and sentiment and af fords fine entertainment for nearly a half hour. The cast of 15 people in-, eludes a church choir of ten people, all having excellent voices and their singing during the three acts, In two of which their accompaniments are played on a large organ and set of chimes, was a big feature. Promt-j nen In the cast was Miss Katherine Bunn, who proved a big favorite. lu addition to being a very pretty woman, wom-an, she has a fine soprano voice and a winning personality Hugh Gibson as Mr Griggs, the stuttering drug storo proprietor, also made a big hit and the other thirteen characters In the play are good Fred St. Onge and company present pre-sent a good bicvclo act, which was well received and the dancing of Ed ward and John Smith, both in team; and solo work, was the best of Its kind that has been presented this season. Bessie Browning. "The Vivacity Girl.' holds her place well with the other acts, her different songs be'ing enthusiastically received. Her songs are all original and her Impersonations Impersona-tions wonld be hard to beat |
