Show BRYAN TRYING TO SAVE RYAN Urgent Telegrams Arc Sent to Mexico in Behalf of American Ameri-can Red Cross Official. Washington, D. C, May 1 The state department today exerted every means to secure Information hs to the report that Dr. Edward Ryan, an American Red Cross official, was be-inc be-inc held in Mexico, sentenced to be executed Secretary of State Bryan, Just before a conference with President Presi-dent Wilson, sent urgent telegrams to Consul Canada at Vera Cruz and the military authorities there asking for Immediate reports on the Ry.m Incident. The secretary had already request ed the Spanish ambassador, representing represent-ing the Huerta government here, to look out for Dr. Ryan's safety. Sending Out Truthful Reports, The American authorities, civil, navy na-vy and army, are making every effort to dissimulate throughout the republic repub-lic truthful pictures of the benevolent benevol-ent rule already established in Vera Cruz. There is also reason to believe be-lieve that Washington is quietly work ing to this same end through military milita-ry and civil agents sent here to talk things over with representative Mexicans. Mexi-cans. Close study of the local situation lead6 to the belief that by delaying any contemplated extension of military mili-tary operations, the Washington government gov-ernment feels there is a probability that armed resistance may be eliminated elimi-nated to a measurable degree and countless lives saved.
