Show IMMIGRANTS URGED NOT TO LEAVE TOWN Washington, Jan. 8. His sympathy aroused by the fact that nearly 20,000 poor Immigrants, after having sold their little all to come to this "land of promise" were turned back at the door because the Immigration law found them unacceptable, Secretary Wilson of the department of labor, is preparing to forewarn all such prospective pros-pective immigrants and save them, if possible, from breaking old home ties in a useless search for new ones. "It stirs one's heart," said the secretary sec-retary today, "fo see these poor people, peo-ple, many of whom have disposed of all their little holdings and made long Journeys overland even before beginning the ocean trip, forced back to tho hardships they were fleeing from. The thing to do is to keep from starting. "With the aid of the foreign governments gov-ernments and acting in co-operation with our state department our bureau bur-eau of immigration can without any new legislation, I think, perfect a practical way of finding out In advance ad-vance whether those who desire to ccme will be allowed to enter or not." The secretary, who has discussed the subject with diplomatic representatives represen-tatives here of a number of European Euro-pean countries, among others with Ambapsador Dumba of Austria-Hungary, said the plan seemed a wise one. W. W. Husband, of the department, has been in Europe for some tlmo past studying the situation from the European point of view, has just returned re-turned and reported to the secretary' that the governments there would cooperate. |
