Another large contingent, It is said, will follow In a few weeks. Coincident with the announcement of the departure of the Russians from the "coast comes the further Information In-formation that they have purchased a large tract of the richest land in Park valley, in Boxelder county, and that in addition to Immediately setting set-ting out to farm and raise stock on a large scale they will build a town of their own within their possessions. Thoso who began the pilgrimage yesterday are traveling on a special train of four cars two baggage cars and two passenger coaches. The coaches are fitted up for comfort, and In addition to other conveniences they are supplied with stove3, in order that the Russian women may cook their own meals on the way and not come in contact with Americans. In fact, It Is to get away from American customs that the Russians are coming, to this state. It is only tho older ones, however, who object to the check put upon them in California. Cali-fornia. They object strenuously to their young people adopting- American customs, especially as to dress, and It is their intention to go to a partly isolated locality, where they will be free to follow customs such as prevail pre-vail in the land of their birth. In a recent court decision, rendered at Los Angeles, Judge Monroe held that a young woman, whoso maiden name was Sarah Katoff, was not legally le-gally married to Jacob Ural, who claimed her as his wife, and the marriage, mar-riage, which was entered into under tho Russian custom, was annulled. This action greatly incensed the older Russians and they at once began their preparations for fleeing from what they termed "persecution." In harmony with this determination they began to look about for a placo to go, and their eyes were at once turned toward Utah. From what they had heard concerning the possibilities pos-sibilities in Park valley, in Boxelder county, they at once became Interested Inter-ested in that section, and one of their leaders was sent to this state to make a thorough Investigation of conditions in the valley. His report was satisfactory satis-factory and negotiations were then begun, which terminated some weeks ago in the purchase of several thousand thou-sand acres of land. Tho Russians, who comprise the two colonies that will cast their lots In Park valley, are said to be excellent excel-lent farmers, skilled in every branch of husbandry. The colonists are expected to pas through Ogden tomorrow on their way to their new home. |
