Show AUTO FANS ARE EAGERF1 RACE Vanderbilt and Grand Prix Races Next Month at Santa Monica. Los Angeles, Jan. 31 Automobile circles here are very active In anticipation antici-pation of the Vanderbilt Cup and Grand Prix races at Santa Monica next month. Two Stutz cars are entered en-tered It is also learned that Barney Oldfield will drive for the Mercer firm. The Stutz entries were the tlrst received. Harry Stutz said recently: recent-ly: "We enter Into the new year in the most optimistic spirit and 1 venture to say that before another twelve months have rolled around we will have added materially to the reputation of our cars for speed and utmost reliability. "To me the interesting part of a race is not the car that 'wins or the speed which is made, but rather the performance of the car throughout the race, that Is, the ease with which it runs or tho lack of even minor mechanical troubles." Palma Will Not Drive Mercer. Ralph de Palma is not likely to drive a Mercer car, although he has been working for months at the factory fac-tory hi Trenton and was expected to be one of the Mercer team. The reason rea-son is thnt he doesn't want to bo on a team with Barney Oldfield. and the latter already has heen engaged by the Los Angeles Mercer agent on such terms that the engagement must be kept. De Palma will not lack for a mount by any means. He will have E. F. Schroeder's Mercedes, the same inake with which the Italian won the last running of the Vanderbilt In 1912. Also there is a good chance that de Palma will drive as a member mem-ber of the Mercedes team In the French Grand Prix on July A. He nso may be with the Mercedes in the next 500 mile race at Indianapolis. |
