Show SCANDAL AT THE INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL John T. Butcher, formerly Inspector Inspec-tor of manual training in the State Industrial school of this city, is under un-der arrest at St. nthony. Idaho, on the charge ol rape alleged to have been committed at the local school March 31 of this year with Grace Noorda. a 17-year-old Inmate of the institution He will be returned to Ogden for trial. At a recent meeting of the board of trustees of the school the girl appeared ap-peared and made the statement that Butcher had taken advantage of her in his room In the girl s cottage Superintendent Su-perintendent E G Gowan and the board made further investigations, and. arriving at the conclusion that the girl told the truth, filed a complaint com-plaint against Butcher. Butcher and his wife came from Indiana, highly recommended as accomplished ac-complished workers In schools of correction. cor-rection. He had held a responsible position in the Indiana school of cor rection at Plainfield, Mrs. Butcher was given charge of the kitchen and dining room in the girl's cottage and. as a matter of convenience and ac- oommodation, Mr. and Mrs. Butcher were given rooms there. Mr Butcher was made inspector of! manual training. He however, did not do satisfactory work and on March 30 he was discharged. It was1 the following day that he committed the crime as alleged in the complaint. The girl was a former resident of Ogden but her father now lives In Salt Lake. Immediately after Mr Butcher's discharge dis-charge he and his wife went to St. Anthonj where he was given a position posi-tion in the Industrial School of Idaho, Ida-ho, being assigned to the boy's division di-vision of the Institution Speaking of the case today. Superintendent Super-intendent E. G Gowan said that both j he and the board expect considerable I unpleasant notoriety in the matter, but that thev are determined to place I the responsibility where it belongs, not onh as a protection to the Industrial In-dustrial school of Utah, but ot Idaho and Indiana as well and other states where Butcher may apply for posl- Butcher came to us highly rec-I rec-I ommended." said Dr. Gowan. "and we I needed a man of experience in that I department However, he remained onlv a few months when we discovered discov-ered that he was not a suitable per-I per-I son We discharged him for reasons other than indicated In the complaint we have HW against him. We have the bare statement of the young girl without any corroboration whatever, but we are convinced that she tells j the truth. There is no question but thai the governor will honor requisition requisi-tion papers and Butcher will be returned re-turned to this city to meet the chargt against him.
