It was tho custom In Ireland and other Christian countries to build tall narrow tow era close to many of the churches It Is not known for certain why they were erectcd.but It la aupposed that, besides being used for religious purposes, they afforded shelter tor priests and people In times of danger. After bells had been Introduced Intro-duced they were sometimes hung In these towers. The round towers were mostly from eighty to a hundred feet high, and usually crowi'il with a peaked roof. They 2 li,nied by small windows, and 1 n -iit from story to story was male by means of ladders. As n matter of safety, the door was placed at a considerable dls-i dls-i tance from the ground.
