| Show HORSE THIEVES AT WORK they steal a couple of animals saddles and Br iddles salt lake july 0 it Is not often that a man will engage in stealing horses from beneath the very shadows of the prison from which he has just emerged but it the surprises of the officials of the utah state prison are founded in fact such a thing actually happened last night at that institution this morning two of the finest horses kept at the place were missing and their disappearance Is laid at the door of a prisoner released yesterday with the horses went two valuable saddles and the exact whereabouts of which were doubtless as well known to the thief as were the stalls of the horses no one knew the premises better than did the man who is suspected of being the principal in the most darang and audacious case dt horse stealing in local annals the animals were so tho barn right under the very nohea of guards they were the best saddle horses in a bunch of 10 or 12 most of which were not riding horses at all that two men were implicated la evident from the act that the tracks showed that the horses had been ridden side by side and that a galI far as parleys canyon where all trace was lost the premises too were well known to the thieves there is but one outlet to the prison field on ha east and that is reached by a winding road that crosses a bridge there was not an unnecessary detour made by tho thieves from the stalls to the gate prisoner no 1874 was released morning from serving a term of ia months for grand larceny committed in southern coun ties he was sent up from the sev anth district horsch aal cattle A short time ago he was put to work in the table by warded pratt but wag put back Inside the walls for unruly conduct ho was very resentful towards the officials and to some of the prisoners made the threat that ho would get even tho threat coupled with the fact that he knew the exact stalls of every horse i and the of saddles and buddies dormi the chief ground of suspicion against him |
