salt lake and three miles the city creek road the body naw lies awaiting the arrival of tho officers the matter was reported at police headquarters at 2 this after soon by F W dover and robert mcclure who had been on a hunting trip in the mountains As they decided not to examine the body until the authorities ties had viewed the remains they can throw but little light on the mystery 1 according to the story told by the gentlemen they were walking along the mountain side northeast of city creek about nine miles distant from this city when they came upon the partly decomposed remains of a man lying out in the open the man was apparently about 50 years of ago and biad a sandy beard and moustache tho hair which was of the same color IB missing from the skull save where the head rests upon the ground A peculiar feature about the affair is that with the exception of a vest white shirt undershirt and black tie the body is nude the two men noticed some papers sticking out of the vest pocket but did not disturb them they looked around on the mountain ale for the missing clothing but failed to find any however it may be close at hand as the ground at this point Is partially covered with snow from a casual examination of the remains no wound was apparent and the cause of death is a mystery COMPANY GETS WATER RIGHTS salt lake nov 21 judge marshall hag handed down a decision in the state and an attorney who fd considerable prominence at the bar 1 was found yesterday morning on pine ridge five miles up city creek canyon and three miles to the left of the canyon the discovery was made by F W dover and robert mcclure while hunting chickens for ahrea years mr brown has been demented frequently he wandered about in the hills for days the corpse was stripped save tor an undershirt and lay not tar from a trail leading over tho ridge the flesh was drawn and pinched which made it evident that ha had died from exposure dover and mcclure brought word of their discovery to the police they believed the man had beep murdered justice of the peace daha T smith sent two men with dover and mcclure to bring the body to the evans morgue the body was identified as that of wiley brown about three years ago mr browns health tailed him and he became a physical wreck for come time he was mentally unbalanced shortly afterwards he was committed to the mental hospital at provo and remained turere until a year ago when he was released he was unable to practice law in the courts on account of deafness but did some work in the offices of several law firms t his mental aberration became noticeable ti again when he read an antl resolution in the republican city convention this fall he wandered away several times up city creek canyon after this and grew steadily orse norse n about two months ago he was found on the fourth floor of the city and the county building suffering from a stroke he was taken to the county jail and when arraigned before judge G G armstrong was committed a second time to the mental hospital his friends had aba commitment suspended during good behavior and talked of sending him to a private sanitarium for nearly three weeks mr brown had been missing john T lynch the real estate man received a letter from mr browns eldest daughter la santa fe new mexico about her father mr lynch went to mr browns room at west first south street but all his effects were removed from the room upon inquiry mr lynch learned that brown had not been seed for over a week when his case was further investigated it was learned that he had riot visited bis customary haunts for saratoga wyo nov 21 A large party ot union pacific surveyors and their outfits were unloaded at walcott this morning and the engineers commenced work at once running surveys tor a branch from walcott to saratoga and encampment ona party will resurvey a route surveyed several years ago by the union pacific while another party will follow and set the grade stakes there is great excitement in walcott as the result of ahe arrival of the union pacific forces and the report that the company will unload machinery teams and men there during the week and beean the construction of tho branch lino the surveyors are paralleling the grade of the saratoga encampment road which Is being dollt by ex gov arnor chatterdon Chatt erlon and associates they will cross the river three miles below saratoga and enter the town from the west it ia announced by agents of the union pacific here that the branch will be hurried to completion and that it will not stop at encampment but will push on across the divide between the two branches of encampment river into colorado through longs park and into the elkhead country where the large fields of anthracite coal which have been coveted by the overland for many years will be tapped whether tho line will end there is not known A large party of saratoga encampment camp ment surveyors is working from this place south having completed the surveys and cross sectioning 0 the line from walcott some difficulty is being experienced in securing a practicable route from saratoga south to encampment owing to the grades but tho engineers will work rapidly BO stockton nov 21 A fatal accident occurred here today while a san pedro freight train was pasing through en route to los angeles V H armstrong a resident of salt lake city and a passenger on the freight train was thrown beneath the wheels of the caboose and instantly killed the wheela passing over hi body literally cutting it in two armstrong was a prospector in the caboose outfit and a grubstake with waa gome on a prospecting trip to las vagas in company with harry gobleman also of salt lake aa the train stopped at blockton ton armstrong left the caboge at tho station sandwich to 21 the identity of senator cantankerous friend from up the river was disclosed in the session of the slate legislative investigating committee today by the testimony of john A nicholas a lawyer under retainer by the equitable lite insurance society mr nichols had written senator depew a letter referring to an individual in the above terms and this letter was read at the session of the commatee comm ltee friday when senator depew was on the stand the senator BBS unable to recall who was meant by the cantankerous tan kerous friend but today sir disclosed a series of payments to W S manning of albany a former actuary who had been connected with tho investigation of companies in 1877 mr hughes inquired as to a report that manning has been in possession of information that was suppressed during this investigation and that would have been detrimental to the equitable mr nichols could not recall the suppression of information but he detailed the payment of sums of money over a considerable period to manning as an inducement to give up his business as actuary in which capacity he believed manning was a menace to the equitable cem pany aside from the disclosures made by nichols on the witness stand the feature of the day was the appearance appe aranca of united states senator thomas C platt who did not hesitate to tell of tha contributions of insurance companies to state campaigns the equitable the mutual and the new york lite were the only insurance companies that made such contributions the equitable contributed regularly to state campaigns alie mutual the same sum frequently and the new york life a sum not as large these moneys were always delivered in cash to senator plaits office by messenger and be turned them over to the stale committee the senator said he was expected to influence the legislature when any legislation appeared that was hostile to tho insurance companies senator platt said he believed he had ached president mccurdy of the mutual life for a contribution when the needs were very great he had however never been asked to use his his influence in any measure before the legislature nor had he ever done so he knew nothing about today he continued his explanation of the agency system of which he had charge and the manner of arriving at the commissions one part of his testimony caused much amusement to the committee aa well as the spectators when he described a fight with the new york life over the taking of agents in this statement mr tarbell told how he had won over A general agent and two hundred sub agents of the new york lite in this city without the cost to the equitable of so much as one dollar the only inducement offered was that the agents could make more on a commission basis than under the salary of the new york lite mr harbell detailed this deal with the agent in its various stages and said that ha closed the deal on a sunday he thought it was a good job as it was done on a good day mr bowmans said be is a member of tammany hall he said he looked after getting the tax assessments of the officers of the equitable society reduced among these he said were henry B hyde james H hyde and gage E he had never received money for political purposes nor any contributions to tammany hall at this point senator thomas C platt arrived and mr bowmam was temporarily excused senator platts entrance created a stir in the committee room he walked slowly on the arm of robert C morris his counsel and leaning heavily on a cane he took the witness chair and waa sworn mr morris started to address the committee but stopped upon chairman armstrongs explanation that counsel are not formally heard by the committee senator platt had been carried up the of the city hall to the door of the committee room in a chair when ha was seated and sworn mr morris said that the senator would answer all questions freely and frankly in reply to questions by mr hughes senator platt said that he had received contributions more particularly from the equitable lite assurance society solely tor the state campaign fund and during a period of at least ten years the contributions were of each he could not tell when they commenced but they continued everyl year for some time he received no money from the equitable for the local campaigns nor forthe expenses of any candidate to the legislature the money was divided as seemed expedient the packages of money he eald were sent over to his office by a messenger and he ally turned them over to the |
