Show THE EAST OGDEN AND RAILROADS while judge A R was east the early part of this month he found uma to pay a visit to the old homestead 40 miles from boston he saw much that impressed him the autumn leaves in rich coloring brought back the halcyon time of boyhood but there was little else to remind him of the day of the old oaken bucket by contrast mr was not a city raised youngster he drew his earliest aona from the wild shrubbery and the lowing herds and abo other nature lessons away down east on the farm in days there were villages nestling close to boston where a boat factory or tannery had formed the nucleus of a town the presiding genius of which was an individual who stood out prominently and was pointed to as lord in his own little sphere ot influence this has all disappeared the country has been made suburban to the city by a network ot electric roads and the independent manufacturer has been crushed aside or absorbed by concentrated wealth abo children of the former country autocrat no longer command attention and are almost lost from public view this wonderful growth of the suburban trolley lines convinced mr hoy wood that ogden should profit by the lesson cities that arc growing are doing BO by seeding out these arteries of trade and he says that ogden roust do likewise he states that the banks of this city are overflowing with money much ot it inactive why not use this unemployed wealth in a network of trolley lines say one line to plain city another to brigham and a road into ogden valley and mr heywood Is convinced that to be most secure in its position ogden must not trust to outside capital gaining a mastery over our destiny by building our roads the trolley lines must be controlled at home to prevent discrimination he was asked what he thought of the future of this city and this question brought up the subject of railroads one of the most material factors in ogdena progress he stated as a fact that ogden Is at ot the far west and cannot be ignored as a railroad center he la ot the opinion that the burl ington or northwestern will build to tn tip h r r assurances from a creditable source that the burlington has well matured plans for reaching ogden he was not convinced that the route of the western pacific has been definitely determined ter mined he walled how the oregon short line was to have been built from ogden all the details had been worked out and orders issued to begin construction st when col dodge suddenly upset all arrangements by ordering work commenced at granger there Is some talk of the gould interests securing possession of the old line ot the central pacific north of tho lake and extending it into the northwest corner of utah and from there sending one branch across the state of nevada to the california coast and a second across into the northwest through part of idaho oregon and washington this is within the bounds of possibility the knowledge ot which may cause sir heywood to hesitate to accept aar final the declared intention of gould to build his western pacific around the south end of great salt lake |
