Show remarkable CHASE IS OFFICERS DID SOME CLEVER WORK ON A SLIGHT CLUE alleged fugitive from justice again landed in the county jail from thursdays standard with P B lodged safely in the county jail tha sheriff and the other officers who for the past three days have led strenuous lives in tracing the alleged fugitive from justice are resting and notes on the release flight and capture of the man who has caused them so much trouble sheriff bailey sheriff sweeney of eureka nevada and special officer sullivan of the oregon short line arrived in the city this morning with their prisoner coming up from garland where they spent the night on the morning train from malad the officers took no chance on their prisoner escaping and he was handcuffed to sheriff dalley for the entire distance the two sleeping side by side last night at garland locked together after sa had been placed under arrest at malad by sheriff ayans the sheriffs office hero waa notified of tho arrest but sheriff bailey sheriff sweeney and special officer sullivan had already learned of the direction taken by the fugitive in his flight and late tuesday night had left in 0 rig tor the north they were at brigham city when word was received of saw sers capture and on being notified immediately left for the idaho town from there they communicated with the state s attorney as to what steps to take to bring sawder back here and after he had communicated with the attorneys representing sheriff bailey was advised that saw aers attorneys were agreeable to their man being brought into utah without requisition papers on condition that he be turned over to the custody of sheriff bailey and brought to weber county and that they would wait a reasonable time for the necessary papera to be brought from nevada before taking further action in the case and that no tuther action would be taken until the arrival of tha papers in order to avoid any legal complications sheriff evana of malad took the prisoner to the state line and there turned him over to sheriff bailey when the party left malad it was expected that they would arrive in the city early last evening but they failed to make connections at garland and it was necessary to spend the night there late last night when it was learned that tho sheriff with his prisoner had not arrived there were several wild rumors about the city to the effect that had been spirited out of the stat into nevada As it was known bailey was at garland he WAS communicated with and they had missed the train and would not be in until this morning after nad made good his escape on tuesday the officers now admit they were for a time completely at sea us to the mans whereabouts how he got out ol 01 the building on washington avenue where he was last seen and in which direction he had gone all trains out of the city had been closely watched and it was known that he could not have left by rail so tho officers decided that be must have departed in a rig and taken to the hills but as to which way he had gone they could not determine news of the flight was telephoned in every direction giving a description of the man and the officers then sat down to think tho matter oer A bit of information here and there finally suggested that had left in company with kichard davis who has relatives living in malad and the longer the situation was discussed the more certain tho officers became that such was the case and they immediately left for the north in a carriage taking the road 0 o malad after having notified sheriff evans of malad to look out tor their man early yesterday morning sheriff evans went to the rauch owned by richard dails the man who took out of tho city and found that the theory of the local officers was correct as both and dails were at the ranch at the county jail this morning did not freem to be at all cast down by his capture and said that he realized after ha had started that he could not get away and had for that reason made no secret of his presence in malad he said that he had communicated munica ted by telephone with his attorney here and had been advised to give himself up but before ho had an opportunity to do so sheriff evans put in an appearance and placed him under arrest no further action will bo taken in alie case until the arrival of the requisition papers the granting of which will be fought by Saw sers attorneys |
