Show ANSWERS HIM democratic CHAIRMAN 18 GIVEN A FEW REMINDERS attempt to create sentiment on charity dodge 1 shown to be a cry of despair from fridays standard H W gwilliam esq chairman democratic corn ogden dear sir I 1 am in receipt of your communication of dinst containing your suggestion that the coming campaign be conducted by a joint committee in the interest of the poor and that the candidates and committees will not haul any voters to the polls and for tho suppression ot political grafting at the outset I 1 will say that I 1 do not wish to at all impugn the motives 0 yourself or ot those behalf your are acting hufe I 1 think it is a matter that should be dealt with plainly without circumlocution and I 1 shall endeavor to do so in as few words as possible first I 1 am absolutely opposed to all forms 0 graft whether political or otherwise and I 1 state that I 1 have done and am doing all in my power to prevent and suppress the same without heralding the baine in print or seeking or expecting any glittering notoriety or plaudits pl audits second under the wise and safe administration of the republican party overwhelmingly endorsed by the people of out nation inaugurated carried on and enforced in spite of the fierce opposition of your party no one male oi female possessed of health and abl to work need be poor enough to require charity and as to those whom affliction and disease have fallen their wants can better b provided for than through political committees not organized to deal with such matters since becoming of age I 1 have been a member of several charitable and beneficent societies for that especial purpose and have given freely of my time influence and such means as I 1 could reasonably spare for that purpose I 1 mention this solely to show that I 1 am not opposed to properly aiding those in need and regret even this publicity third your offer comes too late to bear the stamp of sincerity I 1 have already made my contracts and arrangements range ments and I 1 dont go back on a contract such an arrangement as you propose in regard to the transportation por tation of voters ought to have been proposed at the outset 0 the campaign and not delayed until my arrangements range ments had been made and you find yourself forestalled in the things that your candidates sought to get for themselves fourth my oe is that part of the agreement you propose la one that is kept by ahoe whose interest int erast it Is to keep it and knolly disregarded by those whose interest it Is to break it I 1 recall one instance in this city where the republican and democratic parties entered into an agreement to put up nonpartisan non partisan and joint candidates for school trustees for the respective spec tive wards of this city and the democrats in violation of that agreement put up democratic candidates where republicans had been selected I 1 do not mean to say sir that you would not do what alca in your power to keep the agreement you propose it it waa made but t do think it would be entirely beyond your control and that I 1 would fail in my duty to those who trust me were I 1 to attempt it lastly in conclusion I 1 will say that I 1 propose to conduct a clean honorable honest ana vigorous campaign to the end that the republican candidates will be the next officers of our city I 1 have what I 1 consider a laudable ambition to accomplish that because I 1 believe my candidates are upright honorable capable people and that the best interests of our city will be served by them you and your committee do all you can to have a fair election and I 1 and mine will do the same and I 1 am satisfied much good along that line will be ane result you will remember that at the first meeting of the republican committee it was decided that candidates could not employ individual workers yours truly signed E T chair man |
