Show ARE STATE TAXES INCREASED The Salt Lake Herald-Republican, with a great hurra.,, shouted shout-ed that Governor Spry had reduced the state taxes one-hnlT a mill on the dollar. That is only -partly true. Tho tax levy has been reduced re-duced one-half mill; that is, the state tax levy last year was 8 mills, this year it will be 7 1-2 mills. But now comes the Salt Lake Tribune Tri-bune and points out that the value of the state's property has been increasing from about $1SG,000,000 to 200.000,000 and that 7 1-2 mills on the last amount brings in more money than S mills did on the first amount. Tf that is true, and the last published report of the state board of equalization say it is true, where then is the economy of our present state officials? The fao(s are as follows. In round numbers the assessed valuation of Utah property in 1910 was 18G million dollars and a tax levy of 8 mills brought in $1,488,000. This year 7 1-2 mills will bring $1,500,000 on 200 million mill-ion dollars assessed valuation. The state government aotually receives re-ceives $12,000 more money under the 7 1-2 mill levy than two years ago, If the Republicans of Utah expect to fool the people of Utah by such cjnntrap talk of tax reduction they will discover their mistake mis-take on election day. The Salt Lake Tribune asks why so much money is collectod from the people when over two million dollars of the state money is deposited in. pet banks, not drawing one cent's interest. Read the following from the Tribune: lt Tax pioao DIshone-t. With two nnd a halt mllllone of dollars lying Idle In the Stale trM-ury, trM-ury, the State Board has made a protonso of reducing the levy for State purposca. Vnluatlona wore raised all over the State and the paltry hnlf-mlll hnlf-mlll out from the levy reduced the amount tq bo collected from the whole State, but $100,000. At four per cent per annum the immense aum In the 8tate treasury should earn $100,000 orery year, and easily make up that amount to tho taxpayers of tho State. The county assessor plnces the valuations on city property as well aa county property, and the county treasurer collects from tho city as well as from the county As a result, the county has a large surplus on hand most of the tlmo, balonKing to the city as well as to the qounty. This, too, lies Idle In the bank without earning a penny's worth of Interest to tho taxpayers. Both the. Tho oily commission has incurred tho enmity of that bos by requiring banks to pay the interest on deposits and by adopting other business muthods at variance with wull-establlshod. policies of tho machine. It Is of no lasting boncflt to tho Republican party nor to any one else J to conceal tho truth in one onso and state falsehoods in another to screen i a party maahino and misrepresent tho people themeelvea.
