Show AVIATORS NEAR DEATH IN WATER Vallejo, Cal., July 29. A hydroplane, hydro-plane, driven by Herman Strelcher and Svere Johnson was wrecked near here yesterday by tho wash of a scow Bchooner nnd Strelcher and Johnson escaped drowning only by. a difficult swim through a choppy sea to Black point several hundred yard3 distant. The steamer continued on its course and the hydroplane sank. The hydroplane, which was built by the two men and was being tested, loft here early In the morning. A buoy with a forty-foot line was attached at-tached and two H fo savers were taken nlohg When the bay was reached the Bpark plug failed, nnd, as the sea was rough, the occupauta found it Impossible Impos-sible to keep the craft balled. When the wash from tho scow filled the gunwale the hybrid craft dived straight to the bottom. Tho two adventurers ad-venturers remained on Black point until un-til nnothor scow camp along and took them off. The buoy floated above tho hydroplano and It was hoisted to the deck of the scow. nrv |
