Show TRIBUTE PAID TO FORMER OFFICER The district court this morning paid tribute to the memory of Joseph Bailey Bai-ley when the two judges presiding made the following record. Judge Harris At the adjournment, of court, tho gentlemen who are present pres-ent to serve as jurors in this court will be excused until you arc further notified to atten.l. It is the intention of the court at this time to adjourn for the daj out of respect to the memory mem-ory of Joseph W Bailey, a prominent citizen of the city and county, and a former officer of this court. Judge Howell will make a few remarks on behalf of tlie court Judge Howell It is deemed proper, gentlemen, on account of the death of Joseph W. Bailey, that this court should stand adjourned until after his funeral, and the court, both Judges thereof concurring, have arrived at the conclusion that this is proper for the court for the reason, not simply that Joseph W. Bailey was a lifelong and a prominent citizen of this community, com-munity, but for the reason also that he was for a period of three ears the sheriff of this county and, In that capacity, ca-pacity, an officer of this court. In making this announcement the court desires to say that, within tho observation obser-vation of both Judge Harris and myself, my-self, there was no more falthiul public pub-lic officer than was Joseph W. Bailey. He was always zealous and untiring ln the performance of his duty as sheriff, ever active and untiring in giving aid to those who desired and were entitled to aid from hi3 office in the enforcement of the law; courteous courte-ous and kindly in his treatment of every ev-ery one who came ln contact with him in the performance of his duties, respectful re-spectful and attentive In his duties as an officer of the court It seems to us that It Is eminently fitting that when the death of such a man and of such an officer occurs that this court, out of respect to his memory, should stand adjourned during the obsequies over his earthly romalns and that, as far as possible, the court and the offi cers thoreof should attend his funeral norvfees. It is ordered that the court stand adjourned until tomorrow morning nt 10 o'clock out of respect to the memory mem-ory of Joseph W Bailey oo |
