Show INSIDE HISTORY OF SOUTH FORK RESERVOIR. When Wm. Glasmann started his Campaign to build a dam on the South Pork of the Ogden river, with a promise to give to thitf valley the Weans by which hundreds of new homes might be established estab-lished on the unreclaimed lands of Weber county, all except a small coterie of jealous souls, said the movement, if successfully prosecuted, prose-cuted, would do more to energize the latent industries of this region and make Ogdeu grow than anything ever attempted. Some snid the undertaking meant so much to Ogden that they could scarcely bring themselves to feel assured of its success. v Soon opposition commenced to develop from a certain source. Hoping to quiet the men who were laboring for the defeat of the enterprise Mr. Glasmann eliminated himself from office in the temporary tem-porary organization and confided the movement to others including one or two who had been secretly antagonistic. That failed to accomplish ac-complish the desired result, as certain men went around saying, "Let's kill this thing, to prevent Glasmann claiming the glory of having laid the foundation." This sounds rather small as the attitude of two or more prominent men in this community, but it is true. One of the 'men has openly boasted in, the presence of the best citizens of Ogden, that he did all he could in an effort to make the Glasmann administration a failure. In order to injure a political enemy, this man was narrow enough to seek to' do an injustice to the entire community. When it became evident that the South Fork enterprise, was to be killed by inaction, Air. Glasmann resolved to push the thing through as a private corporation, the affairs of which could not be controlled by those who were not in sympathy with the undertaking, - in the meantime placing in writing a guarantee that the city's rights would be protected to the utmost. He asked simply for the oppor- tunity to bring together half a million dollars or more and pour the treasure into the gulch in the South Fork, -but suddenly there was an B outcry aud a warning that no one would be allowed to build to such I good purpose and with aims so high, and the only excuse offered j was that the city claimed the sole right to the risk of investment, al thoughthe city cannot build other than for its own use and if ihere is to be water impounded for irrigation purpose, that impounding must be done by some one other than tho city. This dog in ,the manger attitude cannot result in anything bnt a serious setback for Ogden, if persisted in. The one great need of this community and the people living near it is ,to get water pn the foothill lands and into the canals that run dry iii low water and with this water stir to new life this city and tributary country, and we say that the man who undertakes that task is cnlitled to something better than a nagging opposition that resets on spite and petty jealousy Li another column of this paper appears a communication from the Ogden River Reservoir company addressed to the city board which proves beyond a shadow of doubt that the company does not intend to harm Ogden City in the smallest degree, and it puts the whole matter up to the city commissioners to define their position. |
