General Felix Fe-lix Diaz, leader of tho recont rohol-liou rohol-liou at Vera Cruz, and three officers of his confederacy have been sentenced sen-tenced to death by the court martial by which thoy wore tried in that city The finding of the military couit was anu-iunced In Vera Cruz Saturday Satur-day monilng, but the news did not reacli here until yesterday At the same word of the verdict against Diaz was leccived enmo the word that the military court had decided to recog-nige recog-nige the order of susponslon of the sentence upon the revolutionary leader lead-er granted by the supreme court pending pend-ing investigation as to whother the trial of Diaz should bo by military or civil courL Tho delay in the receipt of news regarding re-garding tho outcome of tho military trial Is characteristic of all communication commu-nication between the capital and Vera Cruz. The uncertainty as to what is transpiring there has served to increase in-crease tho tenseness of the situation. Friends of Diaz still foar the con-sequenceff con-sequenceff of the conflict of authority author-ity that has arisen between Judicial and military courts. Tf the military court obsenes the order of the civil authority the final disposition of the case will be long postponed But it would be no surprise to tliousands here to receive n message announcing tho execution of tho rebel general and his associates. Efforts to save their lives especially especial-ly that of Diaz, continue unabated. zProinent women, men high in affairs, af-fairs, men in congiess and even high nrmy officers, have appealed to President Pres-ident Madoro nr clemency, but to all he has glen the same negative answer. an-swer. To a group of women he intimated that to show clemency would be construed con-strued by the world as an indication of weaknoss. He cited as an example exam-ple that when he captured Juarez lie pardoned General Navarro, which ac-t'on ac-t'on the world attributed to weakness inftead nf to magnanimity. The popular voice of protest has grown so strong against the execution execu-tion that there has arisen between tho president and senate a sharp discord, dis-cord, and as individuals the senators have seriously discussed the quetlon of impeachment becauc of the administration's admin-istration's defiance of that body's interpellation in-terpellation Friday. That the senate will take this step is not considered probable fpr many reasons, one of them bolng the question of succession. An incident show!n2 the popular attitude atti-tude occurred at Chapultepec on the occasion of a visit of a committee of women who pleaded for the Uvos of the condemned men. When leaving tho castlp they were cheered by cadets ca-dets cf the military college quartered in the same building. That the quick suppression of the D'az revolt has shown strength on tho part of the government is conceded, con-ceded, in the capital, but that the situation sit-uation has been greatly improved is a matfer of doubt. A number of rebel bands who were operating In many parts of the republic re-public are still aiield and apparently apparent-ly as nctlvo as betorc. Added to the list Is a well defined new revolt In Yucatan. With the ending of the Diaz campaign, cam-paign, the government Is sending the tioopB hack to the disturbed section, especially about Torrcon and in the slate of Mexico, where the rebels lately late-ly occuplol and burned the railroad stations between Toluca and Mexico City. A late dispatch from Vera Cruz to the Herald says the court martial sentenced sen-tenced to death General Diaz, Colonel Antonio Mifinl. Major Zerate and Lieutenant Salustlo.
