Show H SOUTH FORK DAM. In H f 1 The people of Ogden do not yet fully realize the importance of H ' the South Fork reservoir project, which is now in its initial stages. H As the engineering problems are worked out in every detail, the K V, possibilities of the undertaking grow to great magnitude. It is now H' f , known that the dam, as planned for a height of 200 feet, can be H -' extended to 300 feet, and instead of impounding 25,000-acre feet H of water, will hold 100,000-aere feet, which is more water than H could be used if all the tillable land of Weber county were under H intensive cultivation. Of course the last 00 feet would be very ex- H pensive, because of the great length at the top, and at present there I t is no intention to go over 210 or 215 feet high, at which height ap- i proximately 50,000-acre feet of water would be stored, but these H 1) figures, which have been worked out by the engineers, prove the H fc vast possibilities of the enterprise. iThe. dam is to be built as the demand for water is backed by ' contracts to take water, although the foundation work and each "H- jj ( foot of the exposed structure will be sufficiently strong and massive H I i to allow or a 300-foot dam. if the future should call for a reservoir H ! so large. Farmers and all water consumers will be required to con- H ' '( tract a vear ahead for additional water so that the dam man be 1 ' pushed ahead to meet their wants. This policy will protect the HI ! interests of the stockholders while at the same time offering to the HI ' J water consumers an ample water supply. HI , J People are calling every day at this office to 'subscribe for HI I stock in the reservoir, but the subscription list, as advertised, was HI J 1 closed on bctober 'l and cannot be reopened until the city council HI decides on future action. Members of the council are of the opinion H ' ( that the original price of $35 a share is an extremely low figure and M J that, if any more subscriptions are asked for, the price should be ' increased, and the surplus money derived therefrom should be de- ' voted to paying off tho city debt. Farmers who have not subscribed cannot complain at this action, if taken, as they had ample notice that the stock subscription list would close on October 4. This, of course, is all predicated on the finding of continuous bedrock across South Fork canyon at the dam site. While the prospects are highly encouraging, the only proof of bedrock is the uncovering of the foundation which should bo accomplished within a short time. |
