Ala. oo , WOMEN IN POLITICS Spokane Spokesman-Review Women Wo-men aie becoming so familiar in the field of politics that the mere man rto longer feels more than a passing surprise sur-prise whenever he reads of the appointment ap-pointment of some woman pf. brains and ability to a position formerly con-cidered con-cidered the exclusive domain of man Judging from the increasing number num-ber of women officials elected In this country, In England and in other parts of the world it is evident that women possess certain qualities which appeal to men as being worthy of a fair trial in municipal and local politics. It j seems to be a well-founded opinion I that women are likely to behave more conscientiously in positions of public trust than men and are less likely to succumb to temptations of "graft" and other ells which are ,the bane of , muncipal politics. IDLE RAILWAY CARS. . Tho fortnightly bulletin of tho American Am-erican Railway association states thai on August 2 the surplus of idle cars, on the railroads of the United States and Canada stood ' at 12S.091, compared com-pared with 149,072 two weeks before. The difference is 20.9S1, or 14 per cent. The number of idle cars, or the gross surplus, was 130,130, compared with 150,433, while the shortage increased from 1,361 to 2,015. In the two weeks ended August 2 tho surplus of -coal cars decreased from C2.CS9 to 47,882, while tbe box car surplus decreased from 4C,G75 to 43.C04, Last year there were about 105,000 cars on hand, but a comparison with tho present surplus of 130,000 does not show up this year so favorably when the larger number of cars In service Is considered.
