Show POSTAL SAVINGS m OPENS Tho postal savings department of tho Ogden postoftico was opened for business yesterday and the Interest shown by the people of this city In the now bank proposition manifests that this city will not fall behind Its class In the matter of poBtal deposits. A total qf ten accounts were opened open-ed yesterday and the aggregate amount of money deposited with Uncle Sam was $441, averaging more than $44 to a depositor. The system in .operation by (ho government's postal savlugs department Is the purchase of certificates which can bo redeemed at any tlmo Tho first depositor at the Ogden postofflce yesterday was Edwin A. Garner, a son of Assistant Postmaster Garner, and the first certificate bears series No. 621,001 During the day the savings department clerks weie forced to refuse several deposits which wero in excess of the amount nrescrlbed by tho postal laws "" These regulations provide that any person may deposit money In the government gov-ernment bank to the extent of ?100 per month and when tho amount reached reach-ed $500 they will not be allowed to deposit any further money, but can purchase United States bonds, paying the same rate of Interest as would be paid In the savings department. After this has been done they will bo allowed al-lowed to start another account In tho savings department. Postmaster Shurtllff expressed himself him-self as highly pleased with tho first day's showing and predicts a prosperous prosper-ous business for the local savings bank. |
