Show i ' V-J - ALASKA FOE THE PEOPLE. H ' Secretarj' Fisher, successor to Bailinger, said, on. leaving Seat- H, ' tic for Alaska, that he did not stand with those who would nail up H 4 the Alaskan treasure box and clinch the nails On the inside ; nor E;' h those who would take a crow-bar, break open the box and loot H- its contents, says the Missoula Sentinel. Wc must find the key, he H said, open the box in orderly fashion and sec that the contents are H ' distributed in accordance with public welfare.' Bl This is dealing in generalities and would seem to indicate that L .Secretary Fisher wants the public to believe that he visits Alaska 1 m a receptive frame of mind. Hj It goes without saying that our secretary will be received in Alaska by boards of trade, commercial organizations and commit-1 tees A "leading citizens" who almost unanimously favor the staking stak-ing out of Alaska for private claims. In a new-country the pioneers are always there for their own advantage, and they see nothing beyond the proposition that the general government's interest should be confined to granting them all they ask, Mr. Fisher will hear a lot along this line. The hope for Mr. Fisher's correct diagnosis diag-nosis lies in that he will go behind the clamor and keep it in mind that Alaska belongs to all tho people. |
