Show taft to mm TARIFF VETOES BEVERLY, Mass., Aug. 2S So far as President Taft himself Is concerned, concern-ed, tho tariff will bo the nmln Issue of the 1912 campaign." While tho president presi-dent will speak on many subjects on his western trip, It is certain now that tariff revision will receive most of his attention. Following bis speech to tho Ebsox County Republican club at Hamilton Ham-ilton on Saturday, the president began be-gan today to prepare other speeches on the tariff. Ho obtaiued copies of his veto message on the wool, farmers' farm-ers' free list and cotton bills and at once set to work upon addresses that he exects to deliver later, backing up those vetoes. Mr. Taft Is said to realize that he must not merely defend himself for having rojoctod these bills, but that he must attack the Democrats and progressive Republicans who put them through congress. -The attack upon the Democrats the president can mako almost anj where. It Is understood that the fight upon the progressives will be confined largely to their own territory. Tho president will carry the war west Into tho enemy's country. Tho nature of the attack Is pretty clearly defined alroady It will bo in substance that the progressives who voted for tho tariff board should havo been willing to wait for Its report; that tho revision bills tho Democrats and, InSurgentB drew at tho special session wore "ill considered" and "badly drawn" anu that great Industries Indus-tries of the country should not bo put In Joopardy by such legislation when revision, If recommended by the tariff board, might be expected auy-way auy-way a few months later. It Is probable prob-able that tho president will promise tariff reform so far as he can bring It about at tho noxt session of congress. It Is quite probable that the progressives pro-gressives will be under fire of the president also on tho subject of reciprocity. reci-procity. The president has heard onough from wostorn congressmen to know that reciprocity Is not popular in some states weBt of tho Mississippi. |
