Show BITTER OPPOSITION TO SILVER SERVICE WASHINGTON, April 24. Senator Smoot of Utah today had a conference with Secretary Meer, of tho navy department, de-partment, regarding tho design of the silver service to be presented to the battleship "Utah by the people ot Utah, His call was the result of criticisms made by the Daughters of the American Ameri-can Revolution that the silver plate -was to carry a likeness of Brighatn Young. The senator told Mr. Meyer that tho only representation of Mr. Young contained In the design was that of his figure, as it app'earu on the pioneer monument In Salt Lake City. He said this monument had been chosen chos-en by a committee composed o( three Mormons and three non-Mormons, the chairman being D, C. Jackllni?, v7io Is not affiliated with the Mormon church Ho said Jack-Ung had been largely Instrumental In selecting the design nnd Inclusion of the statuto of Brlgham Young was only Incidental and due ontirely to the fact that it was part of the monument A committee com-mittee representing' tho Daughters of the American Revolution, accompanlea by a delegation of Washington ministers minis-ters and by Mrs.H s. Owen, of Salt Lake City, made verbal protests to Secretary Meyer today against tho acceptance ac-ceptance of the Utah service bearing Young's likeness. Mr. Meyer said the gift was not yet within his Jurisdiction, but that when it had b'en received ho would decide the matter. |
